In 2021 while working in Hamburg and taking a few days to explore the true North, I happened to see a historical map of the Viking Trade Route along the Schlei towards "Haitbu" near Schleswig. This then carried on overland  crossing the Oxen Way another North to South Trade of the Northern Tribes as this area was very important as a trading hub. The Viking route continued to towards Hollingstedt. Where the Vikings entered the local river system travelling south in direction of modern day Friedrichstadt the route effectively created itself nearly 1,000 years ago. We can now offer anyone willing to test themselves the chance to make the leader board and share their story.

 

As for actually having a go, to see if it could be done. Working out how hard it could be, to compete and then claiming this as our event. That took a little longer, as planning, research and thinking this project through, the logistics took longer to put in place. 

 

We're now pleased to offer this Human Powered Eco Challenge to anyone that wants to test themselves, to see if they make the grade as a modern day Viking Explorer.

You may ask why should I buy a ticket, when doing the trip is as simple as following the outline and route book we've created. Firstly we offer a graded level of support as this should be treated as a serious and risky adventure, by taking part you have to accept there are risks. That's why are nearby to offer you some support for the simple reason the longest fjord in Northern Germany is a substantial body of water. The portage to Hollingstedt is on the whole flat and on a nice pedestrian path set to one side of the road.

 

The Race is in a region of natural beauty and protected in federal law and the leader board is closed.

Buying a tickets entitles the participants to an individual goodie bag, a space to write up their individual story with gallery and claim your place on the leader board.

The Viking Canoe trail is for those who want more than just a typical getaway. Racing both the clock and other particpants on the longest day beneath open northern skies, is the nearest piece of far way you can reach with a degree of ease. Uncovering History, hidden landscapes, will help you connect with yourself, the region in a meaningful and sustainable way.
